Never danced before? Start here

Walk in your first night without feeling out of place.

You don't need a partner. You don't need experience. Most social dance nights start with a one-hour beginner lesson, and everyone there will rotate so you actually get to practice. This page gives you the four things you need to walk through the door on Friday.

Step 3 — What to expect when you walk in

The actual mechanics

  • Arrive at lesson time. One hour before social. You'll learn the basic step with other people who are also new.
  • No partner needed. The instructor rotates partners every few minutes. You'll dance with everyone in the room.
  • Cover charge is usually $5–15. Pay at the door. Cash sometimes preferred at smaller venues.
  • Asking for a dance is normal. "Want to dance?" — that's the whole script. Both partners can ask. Either can say no without explaining.
  • You can leave whenever. Most people stay 1-2 hours their first night. That's plenty.
Step 4 — What to wear, what to bring

Just enough, not too much

  • Smooth-soled shoes. You want to pivot. Rubber-soled sneakers stick and twist your knees. Old leather dress shoes work; ballet flats work in a pinch.
  • Layers. Dance floors heat up fast. A breathable shirt + a layer you can take off.
  • Water bottle. Most venues sell drinks but you'll regret not bringing your own.
  • Cash for cover + tips. $20 covers most first nights.
