Created at the Savoy Ballroom in Harlem when 'Shorty' George Snowden coined the name inspired by Lindbergh's transatlantic flight. Eight-count swing-outs; improvisation; air steps pioneered by Frankie Manning in 1935.

What to expect: 8-count basic, lots of swing-outs (a signature open-position move), aerials and Charleston variations at higher levels. Danced to jazz from 1925-45.

Where to find Lindy Hop events

Going for the first time

Swing nights typically open with a beginner lesson. Partners rotate during class, so you don't need to bring one. Smooth-soled shoes help; suede if you want to invest. Music ranges from 1925 jazz to modern blues depending on the organizer.

Ask anyone, thank everyone, refill the dance floor between songs. The community travels — exchanges and weekenders are common follow-ups once you're hooked.
