Argentine Tango vs Ballroom
Argentine tango lives in milongas with close-embrace improvisation; ballroom lives in studios with structured curriculum. Side-by-side on music, movement, etiquette, and scene culture.
What it feels like
Intimate, intentional, conversational. Tango socials are called milongas and follow their own etiquette: eye contact to invite (the cabeceo), tandas of 3 to 4 songs, and a cortina between sets where everyone clears the floor.
Elegant, structured, social. Studio-run socials are the norm: a free group lesson up front, then a 2-hour rotation through 8 to 10 different rhythms. Couples and solos both fit in.
Music & tempo
Tango 60–80 BPM, Vals in 3/4 around 70 BPM, Milonga (the rhythm) around 90 BPM. Most milongas play classic golden-age recordings.
Each dance has its own tempo. Waltz 84–90 BPM, Foxtrot 120, Viennese 174, Quickstep 200, Rumba 100, Cha-Cha 120, Samba 100, Jive 176, NC2S 80.
Basic step idea
There is no basic step. Tango is improvised walking in a close embrace. Expect to learn the walk, the cross, the ocho, and how to navigate the line of dance.
Each dance has a named basic. Waltz is 1-2-3 with rise and fall. Foxtrot is slow-slow-quick-quick. Cha-Cha adds the triple step. Studios drill the basics over weeks.
Solo or partner?
Yes, solo welcome. The cabeceo invitation system takes practice, and most communities will introduce newcomers if you ask the host.
Ballroom socials lean couples-heavy, but studios rotate solo dancers in through the group lesson. Ask the host. They'll pair you up.
What to wear
Suede or leather-soled shoes that pivot easily. Heels are common but optional. Avoid sticky rubber soles.
Hard-soled smooth shoes or proper ballroom shoes. Avoid sneakers and rubber soles; they grip and make turning hard. Smart-casual dress is the norm.
Etiquette tips
Cabeceo to invite, never a tap on the shoulder. Dance a full tanda of 3 or 4 songs. Don't talk through the music. Clear the floor during the cortina.
Travel counter-clockwise around the floor in waltz, foxtrot, and Viennese. Faster dancers stay outside, slower inside. Ask before tapping in. Never cut between a couple.
